Chapter 1

Chapter One is focused on teaching the basics of good design. It contains everything from turning pencil sketches into digital diagrams that can be easily modified to generating robot chassis with custom frame elements at the click of a button. This chapter contains everything your team needs to take advantage of Autodesk Inventor’s digital prototyping and design optimization technology.

Intro

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This series of videos will guide you through the process of building a robot for the FIRST 2007 competition, Rack ‘n’ Roll. Good luck out there.

2D Sketching

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video uses the concept sketch of the robot to show how to fully utilize the sketch command in Autodesk Inventor. Good luck out there.

Design Optimization

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video uses the concept sketch of the robot from the last video to show how to use parameters and forms to solve simple problems. Good luck out there.

Basic Modeling

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video covers all of the most basic modeling tools needed to make a simple part, including the Extrude, Revolve, and Hole tools. Follow Nathan as he uses basic techniques to create a six-inch performance wheel to put on the robot. Until next time, good luck out there.

3D Wireframe

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video demonstrates how create object sketches, or 3D wire frames. Using the tools already shown in Video 3, Basic Modeling, we create an outline of our robot’s frame. Until next time, good luck out there.

Frame Generator

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video introduces perhaps the most powerful tool FIRST students can use during their robot design process: Frame Generator. This video teaches how to quickly and easily construct a robot chassis using the 3D wireframe created in the last video. Until next time, good luck out there.

Frame Analysis

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. You just learned how to efficiently generate a robot frame, but how do you know if it will stand up to normal wear and tear on the competition field? This video shows how to use Autodesk Inventor’s frame analysis tool to simulate how well your frame will withstand an impact. Until next time, good luck out there.

Assemblies and Constraints

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video shows how to assemble all of the parts of your robot using the constraint tool. Follow Nathan as he puts the robot’s ramp together from pre-fabricated pieces. Until next time, good luck out there.

Check In 1

Welcome to Built by Design, a series of videos created to teach FIRST students how to effectively use Autodesk Inventor. Created by FIRST students, this series is meant to help teams improve the efficiency, completion speed, and accuracy of their designs. This video covers the progress we’ve made in Chapter One, and shows off the robot’s progress so far.
