A: My name is Antonio Iorio and I come from Rofrano, a small small village of the province of Salerno, outside of Rome. I study at the university of Rome “La Sapienza”. After having achieved my bachelor degree I am now working toward a specialized degree in Structural Engineering. My great passion is music, and in fact, I play in a rock band. For this project, I worked together with a partner from my school—his name is Diego Valleriani. He loves sports, travelling, and getting to know people from different cultures.
A: The project that we used for the competition was the foundation for our bachelor thesis in Civil Engineering. We were interested in the realization of the three-dimensional model and full rendering of our project. We considered it very useful for a future engineer to be able to do this with great software like AutoCAD Civil 3D, since the engineering profession demands the capability to use these modern technologies to carry out your job well. And, we loved it.
Our tutor throughout the project was Dr. Ing Giuseppe Loprencipe and he encouraged us to realize the model of an intersection between two important roads near Rome. We have deeply improved our early knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D thanks to the software user guides and the Autodesk online webcasts. With the help of these tutorials, we were able to complete the project in about three months.
A: The project consisted of the following steps:
- import of the survey points to create the 3D model of the existing surface
- plan design of the road alignments
- vertical profile design of the road alignments and definition of the intersection
- creation of the assemblies (typical cross sections) to be assigned to the road alignments
- corridor modeling (allocation of the assemblies and definition of all targets)
- extraction of the 3D surface from the corridor
- extraction of the sample cross sections
- import of the three-dimensional model in RDV
- final rendering
A: The thing that appeals to us most about our design is the visual impact that the three-dimensional model offers – a clear, simple understanding of your complex civil engineer project. We also like the immediacy in being able to carry out modifications to the project through the software. We used the RDV tools to improve the visualization, adding some television cameras that simulate the vision that a user will have while driving on this road.
A: When we finish our studies, we would both like to start working in a design firm either here in Italy or abroad. We are particularly interested in design and structural analysis. We’d also love to work in London for a year or two—to experience the multi-cultural life.
