Education Community License Update
Effective Date: October 1, 2012
Autodesk licenses its software pursuant to the Autodesk License and Services Agreement (“LSA”) that accompanies the software and is presented for acceptance at the time of installation. The LSA authorizes use of Autodesk software for different purposes based on the “License Type” associated with the software.
In the past, software provided for free to eligible Education Community members has generally been “Student License” License Type. Autodesk is in the process of replacing “Student License” License Type software downloads with “Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License” License Type downloads on the Community Download page.
Starting immediately, whether the software that eligible Education Community members obtain or have already obtained has the “Student License” License Type or the “Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License” License Type, that software shall be deemed instead to have following new universal “Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License” License Type:
“Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License. If the License Identification identifies the License Type as an “Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License,” Licensee may Install a copy of the specific release of the Licensed Materials designated in the applicable License Identification on one (1) Computer, subject to certain functional limitations described in Section 6.3 (Affected Data), on a Stand-alone Basis, and permit Access to such copy of the Licensed Materials solely by (a) Faculty and Students where Licensee is a degree-granting or certificate-granting educational institution (and such Students are deemed to be Personnel of Licensee for purposes of the Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License), or (b) by the Student if Licensee is a Student; or (c) by Faculty if Licensee is Faculty, in each case solely for Educational Purposes. An Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License where Licensee is a degree-granting or certificate granting educational institution is for a perpetual term, except as otherwise provided in this Agreement. An Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License where Licensee is a Student is for a fixed term specified in the applicable License Identification or, if no such term is specified, the term is thirty-six (36) months from Installation or as otherwise authorized in writing by Autodesk in the case of a license granted free of charge, or for a perpetual term if Licensee has paid a fee for the license, except as otherwise provided in this Agreement. An Educational Stand-alone (Individual) License where Licensee is Faculty is for a thirty-six (36) month term, in the case of a license granted free of charge, or for a perpetual term if Licensee has paid a fee for the license, except as otherwise provided in this Agreement.”
Note: Capitalized terms used in the language above has the meaning given for such term in the standard Autodesk LSA for the software in question. You can find Autodesk’s current standard LSAs here:

So what does this mean to you? Starting today, eligible Education Community members, including Students and Faculty, may use the free software licenses made available via the Education Community on their own personal computers in the classroom for purposes of providing and receiving instruction. Previously free software licenses made available via the Education Community could not be used in the classroom.
Important Note: free software licenses made available to eligible community members via the Education Community cannot be installed or used on institutional computers located in classrooms and laboratories, and instead may only be installed and used on the personal computer of the community member.
