Haiti , Port-au-Prince School project
This is a 30 by 40 feet small single-room school which will not only be used for learning purposes but also to host community meetings and utilize as sleeping shelter for the younger community in Haiti, Port-au-Prince. Since the past disaster in the city has caused a majority of the infrastructure and utilities to be weak or nonexistent, I have used design features and landscape's to create sustainability to the facility. In term of sustainable rainwater flow, I have provided a hip roofing system and have sited the building on a sloping ground level to allow a free rainwater flow and avoid flooding as well. Also, the building was elevated 2 ft above the ground level to prevent access to washing away water to the building. The roof boundary lines were set 3.5 ft off the exterior wall to prevent high sunbeam to penetrate the building during summer. And to allow sunlight in during winter time, I have provided a 1'-7" high window system which runs along the perimeter of the exterior walls 8 ft from the finish floor. This particular feature will provide lighting to the facility during daytime with no need of electrical power(see renders). The perimeter wall exterior surface is covered with block of bricks to cool the building down when it gets too hot. Finally trees which will lose their leaves during winter to allow sunlight in, were planted around the building to provide natural air ventilation during summer time. In term of easy accessibility, a double flush door was provided with a 7 sloppy ramp to allow handicapped easy access to the building.
